The Dhaka Times Desk Actually 'Black Fungus' is not a new disease, it is a fungal disease that is almost a hundred years old. Few people are affected by this rare disease every year in the country.
Doctors have said that there is a risk of contracting this disease if the immune system is reduced due to various reasons including uncontrolled diabetes. In case of this disease, the main symptoms of 'black fungus' are black spots on the body along with nosebleeds, blurred vision, brain inactivity.
Mucormycosis or black fungus is ubiquitous. Doctors say it can also be found in soil, plants, manure or rotting fruits and vegetables. But not all people are affected by it.
Chairman of Microbiology and Immunology Department of BSMMU Professor Dr. Ahmed Abu Saleh told the media that black fungus is a hundred years old disease. It does not usually infect humans. It is also abundant in nature but we are not commonly infected with it. It is found in soil and all decaying organic matter.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people with serious illnesses or immunosuppressed people taking steroid drugs are at higher risk of contracting this fungus. This fungus in nature can also enter the sinuses and lungs through inhalation through the nose. Cuts, burns or skin wounds in people with low immunity can also infect them.
Bardem Hospital, Department of Respiratory Medicine, Professor M. Delwar Hossain told the media that if someone has uncontrolled diabetes. People who are immunocompromised for some other reason can get the disease. As the corona virus is contagious, it cannot spread from person to person.
Research shows that only two out of two million people are infected with this fungus. This disease is also not contagious. All medical colleges and hospitals in the country have the opportunity to test for mucormycosis or black fungus and sometimes this disease is also detected.
However, the treatment cost of black fungus is relatively high. Therefore, experts have demanded treatment at government expense for those suffering from this rare disease.
