The Dhaka Times Desk Before and after the murder of exiled Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the phones of those close to him were hacked. The software called Pegasus of the Israeli company NSO Group is used in this work.
Digital forensic analysis revealed that the phones of Khashoggi's wife, Hanan Elatar, and his fiance, Hetje Cengis, were also tampered with. Similarly, the phones of the top two Turkish officials involved in Khashoggi's assassination were hacked.
At least 17 media from different countries, including the Washington Post, have worked together to uncover these facts. Digital forensic analysis for this work was done in the London-based human rights organization Amnesty International's own laboratory. For this purpose the data of 67 mobile phones was analyzed.
Note that on October 2, 2018, Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was brutally killed inside the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Journalist Jamal Khashoggi was a harsh critic of Saudi Arabia's ruling group including Prince Salman. Therefore, the crown prince of the country, Mohammed bin Salman, is suspected to be responsible for this incident. Saudi Arabia has been denying such allegations since the beginning. Later, various investigations revealed that Prince Mohammed bin Salman had ordered the murder.
According to the new investigation by the journalists, the phone of another wife of Khashoggi, Hanan Elatar, was the target of Pegasus. His phone was basically an Android phone.
The phone of Khashoggi's fiance Hetze Genghis was also targeted. Hatiz Genghis's cell phone was an iPhone. After Khashoggi's murder, his phone was monitored 5 times a day.
After this murder, it is known that on the orders of Prince Salman, a group of 15 members went to Turkey and killed journalist Khashoggi. But this is not the only case. A picture of something bigger behind the story emerges from this collective effort of journalists.
