A large number of people took to the streets on Sunday to protest against the government's failure to deal with the Covid-19 situation in the country. At one point, they clashed with the police.
Tunisian President Kais Saied has announced that he will take over the role himself with the help of a new prime minister. He also said that he wants to restore peace in the country. But the opposition dismissed his move as a military coup.
After this announcement, the members of the army surrounded the parliament building. They did not even allow the Speaker to enter the Parliament. That is why the Speaker of the Tunisian Parliament, Rashed Ghannouchi, accused the President of a coup d'état.
Rashed Ghannouchi said the president has staged a coup against the revolution and the constitution. I hope the institution still survives. In a statement on Parliament's Facebook page, Ghannouchi further said that the President's move is unconstitutional, illegal and baseless. Parliament is still in place and the work of Parliament will continue.
It should be noted that many people have protested against the government in several cities of Tunisia due to the economic crisis and unemployment caused by Corona. They demanded the dissolution of Parliament and the resignation of the Prime Minister. Protesters clashed with the police several times.
