The Dhaka Times Desk Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina commented that Bangladesh is currently a part of nuclear energy and it is for peace.
The Prime Minister said this while inaugurating the first nuclear reactor vessel of the nuclear power plant under construction at Rooppur in Ishwardi, Pabna today (Sunday). Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina participated in the program through video conference from Ganobhaban at 12:15 pm.
At this time, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "As a part of nuclear power, we could make a place there, and that is for peace."
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also said that the electricity generated from this center will go to the people at the village level and it will lead to socio-economic development of the people.
The first nuclear power plant of Bangladesh is being built with the help of Russia. The opening ceremony was attended by Alexei Likhachev, Director General of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation 'Rosatom', Alexander Loshkin, President of Atomstroy Export, and Yafes Osman, Minister of Science and Technology.
Project officials say that after the installation of the reactor, it will not take much time to complete the project. 50 percent of the first unit will be completed this year.
The Government of Bangladesh hopes that in April 2023, the first unit of 1,200 MW capacity at Rooppur will start providing experimental power to the national grid. If all goes well, it will be possible to start commercial electricity supply in February 2024.
It is to be noted that in November 2017, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction of the first unit of concrete foundation for the nuclear reactor at Rooppur in Ishwardi, Pabna, through which the main construction work of the country's first nuclear power plant began. The next year, in July 2018, concrete pouring work for the construction of the second unit was inaugurated.
This huge work is going on in the project area of Rooppur on 1 thousand 62 acres of land. About 25 thousand local and foreign workers, engineers, experts are working tirelessly every day.
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission signed an agreement with Rosatom's subsidiary Atomstroy Export on 25 December 2015 to implement this project.
The total cost of this project is estimated at 12.65 billion dollars for two units to be built with the latest third generation technology with five level security system. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) gave final approval to this project at a record cost in the history of Bangladesh in December 2016.
Now the common people of the country are waiting when this power plant will be launched.
