The Dhaka Times Desk Today is August 21, the day of the bloody and gruesome massacre in the history of the country. The killers took the lives of 24 people including Ivy Rahman that day.
On this day in 2004, the late president Md. 24 people including Zillur Rahman's wife Mahila Awami League president Ivy Rahman. This attack was mainly aimed at the then opposition leader and current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He survived but lost his hearing. Hundreds of people were seriously injured in the brutal attack. Many of them have been permanently disabled.
The saddest thing is that even after 9 years of that terrible attack, the trial is still not over. The trial is going on. Even as the five-year term of the current Awami League-led government comes to an end, there has been little progress in justice. Only 8 witnesses have completed their testimony during this period. Before this, during the four-party coalition government, there were many dramas about the investigation of the case. It is alleged that during the tenure of the previous caretaker government, the investigation was completed and the trial started, but the investigation was left unfinished. Then a new investigation was conducted. The investigation has been going on for two whole years during the tenure of the current government. After that, the trial is going on loosely. As a result, there is considerable doubt whether the trial of this case will be completed even during the current government.
Banned militant outfit Harkatul Jihad (HUJI) carried out the hellish massacre of August 21, but some ministers and leaders of the four-party coalition government have been accused of aiding the killers. It is alleged that there was a plan to make Awami League leaderless by killing Awami League leaders including Sheikh Hasina while sitting in the much-discussed Hawa Bhaban of that time.
A total of three rounds of investigation were conducted in the case filed at Motijheel police station after the incident. First was during the BNP-Jamaat coalition government. But no report was filed. Rather, on the instructions of that government, there is an attempt to take the case to a different branch. Attempts were made to hang the innocent people while saving the main attackers by staging 'Judge Mia' play.
During the previous caretaker government, the charge sheet was issued after the investigation. But in that investigation, the source of the grenade and who was involved in the attack plan was not revealed, and the investigation was conducted again during the current government. In 2009, the court ordered further investigation. After two years of investigation, the supplementary chargesheet was filed on July 3 last year. After completing various legal processes, another 8 months passed before the trial began. Two charges were filed. A murder, another explosive case. Cases are referred back from speedy trial tribunals to special tribunals and sessions courts. Further investigation followed. Charges were framed against the accused in two cases on March 19 last year.
Supplementary Charge Sheet: On July 3, 2012, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Police filed further investigation reports in two cases of murder and Explosives Act in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka. In both cases, 30 people including BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's elder son and BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tariq Rahman, former Home Minister Lutfuzzaman Babar, former Prime Minister's political advisor Harish Chowdhury, Member of Parliament Mofazzal Hossain Kaykobad, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and Social Welfare Minister Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid have been charged. Accused. Among them are former and current army officers and police officers. There are also members of militant organizations.
Including 30 people, the number of accused in this case stands at 52. In the first charge sheet issued on June 11, 2008, Huzi leader Mufti Hannan, former deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu and 22 others were accused.
Among the 22 accused in the first charge sheet of the August 21 grenade attack case, 14 are currently in jail, including former deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu and militant leader Mufti Hannan. Abdus Salam Pintur's brother Maulana Tajuddin, Iqbal (Jhenaidah), Maulana Abu Bakar (Barisal), Khalilur Rahman (Magura), Jahangir Alam alias Badr (Dohar, Dhaka), Maulana Liton alias Zobair alias Delwar (Gopalganj) are absconding. Apart from this, Huzi members Anisul Morsalin and Mahibul Mottakin are detained in Tihar Jail in India.
