The Dhaka Times Desk An amazing mountain is the mountain of four idols. It is known as 'Mound Rushmore' near Rapid City, South Dakota, USA.
The mountain is named after Charles-E-Rushmore, a famous New York jurist during an expedition to the mountain in 1885.
There are huge busts of four US presidents carved out of granite stones on the hill. These are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. More than 2 million tourists come to see these idols every year. The faces of each of the statues are 60 feet long and the eyes are 11 feet wide. Among them, George Washington's face is 18 feet wide and his nose is 21 feet long.
It is surprising to think that 4 lakh 50 thousand tons of granite stones are needed to make these huge faces. On October 4, 1927, the machine was installed on the hill. The idols are so perfectly made that the tourists are mesmerized. From 1938, Mount Rushmore began to attract tourists. The work was completed in 1941. That is, the work of making these idols continued for 14 years. 360 artists worked tirelessly day and night to create the idols. Many of the artists are still alive today. One of them is the sculptor Gutjon Borglum. He said the real work is still to be done. He wanted the idols to be made up to the waist, and a royal staircase from the back of the idol's head.
Gutzon also wanted to have statues of many other famous people. He wanted the entire history of America, the identity of each statue and the Declaration of Independence to be engraved on the stone. But the government officials did not agree because it would take a lot of money to do this. As a result, his expectations remained unfulfilled. Gutzon would paint with a box of paint and tell the workers where to run the machine. Workers were paid 55 cents an hour for this work. But if the statues on Mount Rushmore were actually made up to feet, each statue would be 465 feet tall. One and a half times taller than the Statue of Liberty.
