After being arrested on Thursday in a case of murder and assault, the former MLA named Atiq Ahmed was being taken by the police for a physical examination on Saturday night.
According to BBC news, when he was standing near the medical college at around 10:30 p.m., he was talking to reporters when a pistol was pulled out from close range and he was shot in the head. His brother Ashraf, who was standing by that time, was also shot dead. The shooters were disguised as journalists at that time.
According to local media reports, the three men surrendered to the police immediately after the shooting. They have been taken into police custody.

Atiq Ahmed has been claiming that his life is in danger because of the police. A few days ago, Atiq Ahmed's minor son Asad was shot dead by the police. Asad and another person were absconding in a murder case. Earlier this week, two people were shot dead by police in what police described as a 'gunfight'.
It can be seen in the live video, while talking to the journalists, he was asked whether he went to his son's funeral or not.
His last words on camera were, 'They didn't take us, so we couldn't go.' Just then, the men dressed as journalists shot him with a pistol at his head. Then his brother who was standing next to him was also shot dead. A policeman and a journalist were also injured in the firing.
Atiq Ahmed, a former MLA (Member of Rajya Sabha) from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and his brother were arrested on charges of murder and assault. He has been in jail since 2019 after being convicted in a kidnapping case. India's Supreme Court last month rejected a plea for such a hearing, citing threats to his life by the police.
It should be noted that India's Hindu nationalist party BJP is currently in power in Uttar Pradesh. The opposition parties have criticized the government saying that the killings happened due to the negligence of the security system. In the last 6 years, more than 180 persons accused in various cases were killed by the police in Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the opposition says that an atmosphere of fear has been created throughout the province. Human rights activists say the police continue to carry out extrajudicial killings, though the Uttar Pradesh government flatly denies the allegations.
