The Dhaka Times Desk Zayeda Khatun, mother of ex-mayor Jahangir Alam, who was expelled from Awami League, has finally been declared the winner of the Gazipur City Corporation election after a deadlocked vote count.
He defeated his nearest rival Azmat Ulla Khan of Nauka Pratik by 16197 votes.
Independent candidate Zayeda Khatun got 238,934 votes in the clock symbol as per the results announced from Bangtaj Auditorium, Gazipur. On the other hand, his nearest rival Azmat Ulla Khan got 222737 votes.
Even though BNP did not participate, this election was held with a large turnout.
Gazipur City Corporation Returning Officer Faridul Islam announced the final private results of 480 centers in Gazipur City Corporation elections.
It is to be noted that Jahangir claimed to the reporters at the result presentation center at Bangtaj Auditorium in Joydevpur at around 8:30 pm, that after searching all the centers, he came to know that his mother is going to win.
The former mayor said that the voting took place on the same day, and he wants to take the results on the same day. I have taken news from all the centers, my mother has won. I went to the returning officer's office, why is he late? Give the result as soon as possible.
Yesterday (Thursday) polling was completed in Gazipur City Corporation from 8 am to 4 pm. The official results of this peaceful vote are currently being announced. A total of 8 candidates contested the post of mayor in this election. Among them, Awami League's boat symbol advocate Azmat Ulla Khan and independent candidate table clock symbol Zayeda Khatun have a bone-to-mouth fight.
A total of 331 candidates contested this election. Out of which 8 candidates for the post of mayor, 78 for the post of reserved councilor and 245 for the post of general councilor.
