Less sleep is linked to cancer! So how much sleep can be disease-free?

The Dhaka Times Desk Recently, due to professional reasons, most of the people cannot sleep for 6 to 7 hours continuously at night. It damages the body in many ways. Cancer is linked with less sleep! So how much sleep can be disease-free? I will know that today.

কম ঘুমের সঙ্গে রয়েছে ক্যান্সারের যোগসূত্র! তাহলে কতোটা ঘুমোলে রোগমুক্ত থাকা যাবে? 1

Cancer is not a new disease. However, hearing that someone known has been affected by that disease, a cold stream starts running down the spine from the head. Many people may know that uncontrolled lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits and genetic reasons sometimes lead to cancer. However, many people may not know that there is a link between sleep and cancer. Recently, most of the people cannot sleep for 6 to 7 hours continuously at night due to professional reasons. Because they have to work at night, many people sleep during the day to make up for that deficiency. However, a recent study suggests that this characteristic change in sleep may increase the risk of developing cancer, among other diseases.

To make the general public aware of the importance of sleep, a special seminar was organized on the occasion of World Sleep Day 2024. The event was organized by 'World Sleep Society', Kolkata. Dr Saurabh Das, Secretary of World Sleep Society and Calcutta Sleep Society and President of Calcutta Sleep Society, Otorhinolaryngologist Uttam Agarwal were present on the occasion. This year's theme for World Sleep Day was 'Sleep Equity Global Health'.

What exactly can cause physical problems if you don't get enough sleep for a long time?

Starting from digestive disturbances, reluctance to work, lethargy, headaches, migraines, decreased metabolism, as well as various diseases related to metabolism, such as hormonal changes, diabetes, obesity and many other diseases! Another disease has taken a deadly turn in the post-Covid era. And that is 'circadian rhythm disorder'. The normal time when people wake up or go to sleep has completely changed. In medical terms, this type of problem is called shift work disorder. But the question may come how cancer is related to sleep? Doctor Saurabh Das said, “Twenty years ago, the number of people suffering from cancer is much higher now. Everyone knows that the use of tobacco products causes cancer. But one more reason of getting cancer is insufficient sleep, about which most people have no idea. There is not much awareness about sleep among the general public or the professionals yet, but 10 years from now it will definitely come under the health code.”

There are various studies at home and abroad about insufficient sleep and its effects on the body. If a person sleeps less than 6 hours for a long period of time, the risk of developing prostate cancer may increase in 60 percent of men. The information was published in the International Journal of Cancer. More than 55 percent of people can be affected by lung cancer. On the other hand, 40 percent of people can be affected by pancreatic cancer. Again, a research paper published in Cancer Epidemiology says that if women sleep less than 6 hours a day, the risk of ovarian cancer may increase by 30 percent. Another 50 percent may have rectal cancer. There may also be an increased risk of developing breast cancer by 25 to 30 percent. In addition, there is high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance. Dr. Uttam Agarwal said, “Not just cancer, any lifestyle-related disease can turn deadly. All the damage done to our body throughout the day is repaired in this sleep. And when sleep time is reduced, the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) material is not repaired. And this is one of the major causes of cancer.”

In this regard, the advice of these two doctors is that it is not enough to eat only healthy food. The circadian cycle must be fixed beforehand. In other words, disturbing the body's own rhythm will not work at all. Also, in order to get deeper sleep, one hour before going to sleep should be separated from all media (net media). In particular, devices that emit blue light should be completely avoided. Do not consume any food or drink containing caffeine. But you can read books if you want. How to prevent dengue

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral fever. This fever is different from other viral or bacterial fevers. However, this fever is not contagious in any way. This viral fever can occur alone or in combination with other viruses (chikungunya, yellow fever, Burma forest, flu, respiratory syncytial) and bacteria (pneumococcus).

Dengue fever is divided into two categories depending on the severity of symptoms and fever.

1. Common dengue fever

2. Dengue fever with bleeding.

In the case of common dengue fever, the following symptoms are mainly seen-

1. Sudden high fever lasting 2 to 7 days.

2. Severe headache.

3. Pain behind the eyes.

4. Along with the fever, red rash appears all over the body.

5. Severe pain in whole body as well as back pain.

6. Nausea or vomiting.

7. A rash or red bumps on the skin.

In case of dengue fever with bleeding:

1. Bleeding from nose, mouth or vomiting with high fever within 2 to 48 hours.

2. Fluid accumulation in chest or abdomen along with fever.

If any of these symptoms appear, seek medical attention immediately.

On the other hand

Wait at home for the first 3 days of fever. On the other hand, sponge the whole body with water every now and then. This will reduce the level of fever. Drink enough water and rest. After that, if the fever does not decrease or if it continues to increase after some time, consult a doctor immediately.

Things to do to prevent Dengue:

1. Try to keep the surroundings of the house as clean as possible.

2. If there are flower tubs or broken plastic bottles, can shells, tires or polythene inside the house, clean them quickly and drain the accumulated water from the flower tubs.

3. Spray or fog at least 3 times a week to kill mosquitoes.

4. You can keep mosquito repellent cream with you while going out.

5. After evening, younger and older members of the household should use mosquito nets.

6. Clean up any accumulated rain water, as this is the time when Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs.

7. On the other hand, you can use mats along with mosquito nets to avoid mosquito infestation.

8. Since Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day, it is important to avoid sleeping with mosquito nets while sleeping during the day. Source: https://dmpnews.org
