At least five people were killed and more than half a hundred injured when supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi erupted in protests against the army-backed government in several cities, including the Egyptian capital Cairo, after Friday prayers. This has been said by the Ministry of Health of the country.
Activists of Morsi's party, the Muslim Brotherhood, tried to defy security forces and gather in Tahrir Square in Cairo today when the army opened fire on them from vehicles. A supporter of the Brotherhood was shot and killed. The rest were shot dead in the southern city of Aswit, media reported.
Al Jazeera's correspondent quoted the news media as saying that automatic weapons were used to quell the protesters that day. However, the government has denied that any protesters were killed. Clashes between Morsi supporters and opponents have also erupted in the country's second-largest city, Alexandria, and the Nile Delta, after anti-military demonstrations began. Protesters called army chief Abdel-Fatah-el-Sisi a 'murderer' and demanded his immediate ouster. During the clashes, anti-Morsi protesters continued to throw stones at Brotherhood activists, and Brotherhood activists retaliated. The police dispersed the protesters by firing fresh bullets and tear shells at several places, media sources said.
It is to be noted that the first democratically elected president in the history of Egypt, Mohamed Morsi, was ousted by the army on July 3 in the face of public outrage after one year of assuming power. Since then, the war between the army and Morsi supporters began. Already more than 1000 people have died in violence in last 3 months.
