Scientists made jelly fish from rats
Now Harvard University scientists have been able to create artificial jelly fish from whole rat cells. Although artificial, this jellyfish can move and swim when exposed to an electric field just like a natural jellyfish. Scientists at Harvard created a monolayer of cells from the heart of a rat on a patterned sheet of polydimethylsiloxane. which can mimic the character of a type of jelly fish called moon jelly. This type of jellyfish can rapidly contract the body by sending electrical signals through its structures. A similar result was observed when artificial medusoids were brought into the vicinity of an electric field. Scientists call the process of contraction and expansion much like the power stroke of a jellyfish. But elastic silicone works here to stretch the artificial muscles.
"Morphologically we have created a jelly fish," said Parker, the project's lead researcher.
