The Dhaka Times Desk The fifth and last installment of upazila elections was completed yesterday. In the elections held in 73 upazilas, Awami League got 50, BNP 12, Jamaat 3 and others got 8 chairman posts.

In the last phase of the 73 upazilas, all 73 private results for the post of chairman have been published. Awami League supporters have won the maximum number of 50 of them. On the other hand BNP got 12 seats. Jamaat 3, JSS 2, UPDF 1 and Awami League in 4 and BNP rebel candidates in 1 are reported to have won privately.
BNP supported candidates did better in the first, second and third phase of upazila elections in 5 installments, but Awami League did better in the fourth and fifth phase.
Notably, more violence occurred in the last two phases than the first three phases. In addition to general law and order forces, the border guard and the army are present, but the law and order situation has deteriorated significantly in the constituency. The upazila election ended amid widespread violence.
