Popular singer Bashir Ahmed is no more

The Dhaka Times Desk Popular singer Bashir Ahmed is no more. He passed away last night at his residence in Mohammadpur of the capital, Inna....Rajiun. He was suffering from incurable cancer for a long time.

The death of legendary music artist Bashir Ahmed cast a shadow of mourning in the cultural arena. He was 74 years old at the time of his death. He will be buried today after the Zohr prayer.

According to family sources, Bashir Ahmed was born on November 19, 1939 in Khidirpur, Kolkata in a merchant family. Many of his songs in films are still in the hearts of the audience. At the age of 15, he started studying music with Ustad Belayet Hossain. He then moved to Bombay (now Mumbai). There he took training from the renowned master of the subcontinent Bare Ghulam Ali Khan. He moved to Dhaka with his family in 1964. Bashir Ahmed started singing in Urdu films before coming to Dhaka.

Bashir Ahmed was not only a musician but also a poet and lyricist. Bashir Ahmed was then known as Ahmed Rushidi of East Pakistan.

Bashir Ahmed won the National Film Award in 2003 for his song in the film 'Kakhno Megh Kabhi Bristhi'.

'Anek Sadher Maina Amar', 'Sajni Go Lovebese Eta Jhala Ken Bol Na', 'Amake Roate Je Eta Laga Gooda' - his numerous popular songs are now enthralling the audience.

This talented artist is survived by his wife Meena Bashir and two children Humaira Bashir and Raja Bashir.
