Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has captured an airport in southern Yemen, according to media reports. AQAP members have taken over the airport in the port city of Mukalla in Hadramat province, authorities said. The members of the government forces have fled from that area.
It is known that AQAP attacked Mukalla at the beginning of this month. At that time they freed members of the group who were imprisoned in the city jail. Al-Qaeda carried out the attack during Saudi-led airstrikes against Shia Houthi rebels in the country. The group is also said to have seized the city's port and an oil terminal.
On the other hand, according to news media, Vice President of Yemen, Khaled Bahah, has taken a stand against the Saudi ground campaign against the Houthis. He said, 'We don't want to increase the war, we want to stop the war.'
It should be noted that the Saudi-led coalition started airstrikes about three weeks ago against the Houthi rebels who seized the state power in Yemen. which is still ongoing.
