The Dhaka Times Desk Gary Kirsten will no longer be the coach of the South African team after the Champions Trophy tournament to be held next month. After India won the World Cup in 2011, in August of the same year, Karsten was handed the responsibility of South Africa on a 2-year contract.
However, he was supposed to inform the board by April 30 whether he is interested in extending the contract. But he told Cricket South Africa (CSA) that he was not taking the chance.
The South African Cricket Board also took it for granted that Kirsten's contract was not renewed. It is known that the reason is that one of the most successful coaches in cricket has chosen this decision to give more time to the family.
"Gary (Kirsten) wants to spend more time with his family," South Africa Cricket Board president Chris Nanzani told reporters. Kudos to him for the outstanding contribution he has made to South African cricket over the past two years."
The former South African player leaves the team at the top of the Test rankings. It is noted that it was during Karsten's tenure that South Africa topped the Test rankings for the first time. South Africa have only lost twice in Tests during this period.
Nanjani added, “Kirsten Chapter will be etched in the history of African cricket if he can lift the ICC Champions Trophy next month. A tour of Sri Lanka in July and August, a tour of Pakistan in November, followed by important series against India and Australia at home. In this situation, it is also important for us to quickly select Kirsten's successor. So there is no opportunity to sit back."
Meanwhile, Karsten also thanked the South African Cricket Board. He said, “Representing the country as a player and coach is a big achievement. I would like to thank the board for giving me this opportunity. I am truly honored to prioritize my family life alongside my coaching responsibilities."
Meanwhile, Graeme Smith's injury has given a big blow. The South African Test captain had been suffering from pain in his left ankle for a long time. South African team manager Mohamed Mosaji said, “Smith had been suffering from a problem with his left ankle for several months. Despite intensive care and treatment, his injury problem returned. A new test was conducted last Wednesday. Now he has to have surgery on his leg. For this, he may have to spend at least four or six months out of the field. Due to this, unfortunately, he will not be able to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy."
The selectors of South Africa have not yet decided who will be given a place in the team instead of Graeme Smith. AB de Villiers will captain the Proteas in the Champions Trophy.
