The Dhaka Times Desk Jamaat's hartal is going on loosely across the country to protest against the death penalty verdict of Jamaat leader Kamaruzzan accused of crimes against humanity.
A total of 10 people have been arrested from Rajshahi, Chandpur, Dhaka. Although some isolated incidents took place in the capital from Sunday morning, no major violence was reported anywhere till 12 noon. There were reports of scattered processions in streets in different parts of the capital and hand grenade explosions in Old Dhaka.
Around 7:30 am, the police recovered a bomb-like object from Dainik Bangla Mor in Motijheel. It was later defused by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) bomb disposal team. Eyewitnesses said that around 7:30 am, strike supporters tried to set fire to a bus in Dayaganj of Old Dhaka. At that time, local residents and local Awami League leaders and activists chased them and fled.
Police and members of the Rebbe stationed themselves on various important roads of the capital from Sunday morning to avoid chaos during the strike. Rickshaws and autorickshaws have been plying in the capital since morning. However, no long distance bus left from Gabtali, Mohakhali and Saidabad.
Meanwhile, hartal supporters vandalized a passenger bus at Mir Hazaribagh around 6:30 am. At that time, they set fire to a petrol pump, said witnesses. Later, the police arrested two camp workers from there.
Also, a procession was taken out in support of the hartal under the banner of Jagannath University student camp at Dholaikhal in the city around 8 am. Locals said that 4 hand grenades were detonated from the procession.
But the authorities said that rail and launch movement is normal.
Incidentally, Jamaat-e-Islami called for a strike after the death sentence of Jamaat's Assistant Secretary General Kamaruzzaman for crimes against humanity was announced on Thursday.
