The Dhaka Times Desk At least 100,000 people die prematurely in Indonesia every year due to smoke. This information has emerged in a US research report.
According to the news, 90 percent of the victims are Indonesian citizens, the rest are from Malaysia and Singapore. Researchers from Harvard and Columbia University have made such a report.
Every year, burning forests and peatlands in Indonesia's western Sumatra island or parts of Borneo to increase cropland creates dense smog. This smoke sheet spread widely in different directions of Southeast Asia.
The country has been warned many times. That said, they are not taking enough steps to address such a problem. But Indonesia claims that they are continuing to work hard to prevent the spread of forest fires.
The US paper will soon be published in Environmental Research Letters. The research team determined the number of premature deaths by applying computer modeling to measure health risks and data collected by artificial satellites.
The report also said that the maximum of 1 lakh 74 thousand 3 hundred people may have died prematurely in this environmental disaster. The Guardian also said in its news, an average of 1300 people are believed to have died prematurely.
