Suu Kyi made this comment in a statement but did not say a word about the fleeing Rohingyas. He finally spoke on the Rohingya issue in the face of pressure from several Muslim countries of the world including Indonesia. There were massive protests in Indonesia on Wednesday demanding the severance of diplomatic relations with Buddhist-dominated Myanmar.
Earlier in the day (Tuesday), in a rare letter written to the UN Security Council, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed fear that a terrible humanitarian disaster could develop in Rakhine.
He warned that there could be risks of ethnic cleansing in Myanmar. The UN Secretary General said, due to this attempt at ethnic cleansing, the risk of creating instability in the region remains.
In a press conference in the capital Naypyidaw, Myanmar's National Security Adviser Thong Tun said that they are in contact with the two permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia. So that because of the Rakhine crisis, it is possible to prevent the proposal of the United Nations to impose any kind of blockade in the Security Council.
He also said, 'We are continuing discussions with some friendly countries so that this issue is not raised in the Security Council session. China is our friend and we have similar friendly relations with Russia. So it will not be possible to take up this issue in the Security Council.'
According to the latest data from the United Nations Refugee Agency, about 146,000 Rohingyas have entered Bangladesh in the last 12 days. Similar violence erupted in Rakhine in October last year. At that time too, the Rohingyas poured into the Bangladesh border. It is mentioned in that information that about two lakh 33 thousand Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh due to these two rounds of violence.
Meanwhile, the Rohingyas who fled to Bangladesh said that at least 3 boats carrying hundreds of Rohingyas sank in the Naf River last Wednesday. The coast guard recovered the bodies of 6 people including 3 children in the boat sinking incident.
