It is a toilet of environmental research center. What accumulates in these toilets is used for research work. The name of this research institute is Institute for Environmental Microbiology. Scientists are testing whether it is possible to generate electricity from faeces with this electroactive bacteria.

It is known that samples should be taken before the experiment. Jörg Kretsmer, a researcher at the German Biomass Research Center in Leipzig, said there was some ghena in the beginning. But after doing it two or three times it became a habit. We call it the substrate, which is useful in the experiment. Our colleagues use this closet regularly. That's why we get enough substrate.

According to the researchers, human faeces mainly consist of water, undigested parts of food, 'rapage' or dietary fiber, fatty substances and naturally microbes. These microbes also collect nutrients from floating matter. In that case, some bacteria produce electricity!

Scientists say that special microbes that can produce electricity have been known for more than a hundred years. In the 1960s, NASA tried to generate electricity from urine using microbes in space. For that, microbes need to have the ability to withdraw electrons.

But the specialty of these microbes is that they are able to extract electrons from their interior and send them out through the cell membrane.

The scientist said that the electrons released by the bacteria are captured by an electrode. Microbes eat the floating materials. That is, by removing waste, it purifies the water. On the other hand, they release electrons, i.e. generate electricity. The electricity generated in this way, although very small in quantity, can be measured in the laboratory.

Bio-electro-chemist Dr. Falk Harnisch says, "Currently we can only generate a few milliamperes of electricity. But if you think about the toilet you see outside, we can easily recharge a mobile phone battery within 12 hours.

He said, negatively charged electrons are attracted by positively charged electrodes. The current generated from this charges the mobile phone. And water is formed at the minus pole. The water becomes progressively clearer as the microbes consume more floating matter. When microbes generate electricity in this manner, it is called a microbial fuel cell. That is, what is called a microbial-driven-fuel-cell. This is possible even in relatively underdeveloped countries, so the Leipzig scientists have simplified the technology as much as possible.
