Scientists have recently created a substance that can act like red blood cells. Santa Barbara scientists with the help of scientists from the University of Michigan discovered such material. This flexible material can transport oxygen just like red blood cells. Its main component is polymer.
The main function of natural red blood cells is to transport oxygen in the body with the help of blood stream. Artificially made red blood cells can also perform this task very well, according to its researchers. According to the researchers, attempts to create such particles have been made before. But the life of that cell was very short, only an hour. It has been reported that ninety percent of the oxygen-carrying capacity of the newly created cells was intact a week after being injected into the body. Scientists hope this will open up new possibilities in both diagnosis and treatment.
Sameer and his research team first prepared templates made of wheel-shaped polymers to create such particles. The inner template is then coated with 9 layers of hemoglobin and other proteins and removed. The aggregated particles have the same size, shape and flexibility. It is known to carry the same amount of oxygen as natural red blood cells.
