The Dhaka Times Desk Day by day the tendency of people to suffer from insomnia is increasing. As a result, people's risk of stroke is also increasing. According to a Taiwanese study, young people are more likely to suffer from insomnia than older people.

In a four-year study, researchers found that the number of patients hospitalized for stroke due to insomnia increased by 54 percent. In addition, studies have also shown that the majority of people with insomnia are between the ages of 18 and 34 years. They are 8 times more likely to have a stroke than older people.
"We looked at high blood pressure, which is associated with cholesterol and is the biggest risk factor, but we found that sleeplessness plays a bigger role in stroke than cholesterol," said Dr. Dimitris Lopas, director of the International Cerebrovascular Center and one of the study's researchers. The study was done by random selection method, here 85000 people in Taiwan were selected where 21000 people suffer from insomnia and 64000 people do not suffer from insomnia. None of them had previously been diagnosed with sleep apnea or stroke. The study is published in the May issue of the journal Stroke.

After four years of follow-up, 583 people with insomnia and 962 people without insomnia were hospitalized for stroke. After taking other factors into account, the researchers found that people with insomnia were more likely to have a stroke. People who suffer from persistent insomnia are at a higher risk than those with persistent insomnia. Insomnia sufferers are prone to many other diseases apart from stroke. These include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol etc.

Research shows that insomnia is not just a symptom of one disease, but a symptom of many diseases. Moreover, people suffering from insomnia suffer from mental deterioration which in turn leads to suicide. Insomnia is a vicious cycle that harms a person both mentally and physically. If one does not sleep well day after day, the blood glucose level of the person's body drops down and the blood pressure rises, which later takes the form of insomnia.
