Germany's Fraunhofer Institute is trying to create software to recognize these expressions with artificial intelligence. But do people of all cultures express anger and love in the same way? That question may come up.
Jens Gerbas of the Fraunhofer Institute says, "It is possible to understand emotions by looking at many facial expressions. For example, muscle movements, laughter, anger or sadness etc. In most cultures the matter is actually the same. As much as I, as a human, can understand emotions by looking at faces, it is possible to teach software as well. In this case, the success rate is also very high."
Fraunhofer scientists are also trying to train software with images of facial expressions. But why is it necessary?
"A common use is to exchange ideas between machines and humans," Gerbas says. For example, robots could be used to train autistic children about social signals and facial expressions. It also has its uses while driving. Understanding the driver's mental state, whether he is under too much pressure, whether he is distracted about something, can also be understood.''
So is emotion recognition technology really safe?
In this regard, Jens Gerbas said, "With this technology, people can be continuously monitored, even controlled. So it is very important to be careful about using this technology. That is only possible when we know well what can and cannot be done with it. It is also very important to have control over the technology.”
The Fraunhofer scientists said their software is still not being monitored. Due to the improvement in facial recognition technology, surveillance is now also carried out with it. It is also believed that human behavior may change if emotion recognition technology starts working in the future.
In this regard, IT expert and journalist Markus Bekedal said, "Then we can be more careful in expressing our feelings." That's why I can't express myself freely.
