In these incidents of violence, the police arrested more than a hundred leaders and workers of Jamaat-Shibir.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has appealed to the countrymen to make the hartal successful today and tomorrow. Acting Secretary General of the party Rafiqul Islam Khan called in a statement and said that the strike has been called to protest the government's oppression, torture, persecution, mass arrests and conspiracy to wipe out Jamaat-e-Islami.
According to the police headquarters, law and order forces have made extensive preparations for the strike. Police and RAB patrols have been strengthened. Checkposts were set up at various points and searches were conducted. There are also mobile courts for immediate jail-fines for picketers. At around 3 pm, the clash started when a procession was taken out in support of the Jamaat-Shibir hartal at Mirpur-10 roundabout. 4-5 cocktails were detonated from the procession. Police fired 10-12 rounds of tear shells to disperse them. Later, Jamaat-Shibir tried to take out a procession again from Banarsi village of Mirpur. At that time the police fired 4-5 rounds of blank bullets to disperse them. Later the police raided and arrested 7 people.
Abdul Latif, OC of Pallabi Police Station, said that the arrested did not belong to any party. They work for money. When hundreds of people in the area moved towards the police vehicle to free the detainees, the police fired rubber bullets at them. DC Imtiaz Ahmed of Mirpur Division of Police said that Jamaat-Shibir workers took out a procession in Mirpur Roundabout and Banarsi Palli area. They tried to vandalize cars by throwing bricks from the procession. The police fired tear shells, rubber bullets and blank bullets to bring the situation under control and arrested seven persons. DC Ilyach Sharif of Wari Division of Police said that Jamaat-Shibir tried to block the road by setting fire to cotton sacks in Dayaganj of Jatrabari in the morning. Police gave chase and arrested one person. DC Ashrafuzzaman of Motijheel Division of Police said that Jamaat-Shibir marched in T&T Colony area and exploded cocktails. They tried to block the road by burning tyres. The police dispersed them by firing blank rounds and arrested a camp worker named Mohiuddin. At the same time Jamaat marched in Paltan. They tried to block the road by pouring petrol on the road and setting it on fire.
It is to be noted that after a High Court verdict declaring the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party illegal, the party called for a 48-hour strike today and tomorrow. Earlier, the strike was announced on August 12 and 13, but later it was postponed.
