The New York-based international human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called for the execution of Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, who was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity in 1971, to be suspended indefinitely.
In a statement issued yesterday on Sunday, Human Rights Watch called for Kamaruzzaman's death sentence to be suspended indefinitely and to give him the right to appeal (review) against the verdict.
The statement said, 'The government has instructed the Dhaka Central Jail authorities to prepare for the execution of Kamaruzzaman's death sentence. Human Rights Watch is deeply concerned by the news that he has been transferred there following the appeal ruling. It indicates that the ruling is imminent.'
The human rights organization also said, 'His lawyer has not yet received the full final verdict, which is required to file a review petition within 30 days. This is normal procedure in any death penalty case.'
The human rights organization expressed concern and said that 'government officials have indicated that the death penalty is likely to be carried out before the full verdict is issued. Which is against international principles in death penalty cases.'
"Human Rights Watch has consistently advocated for justice and accountability for the brutal crimes committed in 1971," said Brad Adams, Asia director at HRW. But at the same time we have repeatedly said that these trials must be in accordance with international standards in order to preserve the promise of proper justice for the victims.'
