According to media reports, Islamic State (IS) fighters in Iraq's Mosul have contracted the deadly Ebola virus. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet confirmed the matter, Iraq's official news agency Al Sabah has given this information.
According to the media, in June 2014 last year, IS fighters captured the city of Mosul, 250 miles north of the capital Baghdad. IS operatives then clamped down on outsiders entering the city. The IS news there is mainly published by the official and Kurdish media. Due to which their impartiality cannot be verified.
A report published in Al Sabah, citing medical sources in Mosul, claimed that 'various diseases have spread among the residents of Mosul. The hospital recorded 2 Ebola and 26 HIV AIDS cases.'
The media also said that it is not yet clear whether any pathologist or doctor in Mosul is capable of testing for Ebola virus. Zindan, a Kurdish official, told Kurdish media that the sick fighter's symptoms were Ebola.
WHO could not confirm this. They say they have not yet been given any such information by Iraqi authorities.
It should be noted that 8,000 people died of Ebola in the western world. Many more people are affected by this disease.
