However, this time, as the strike supporters uprooted the railway line, the engine and two coaches of the Karatoa Express overturned, injuring around 20 people including men, women and children. It is noted that the number of injured is still increasing.
The incident took place in the area between Kakina and Tushbhandar railway stations of Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat on Tuesday around 2:30 am. Lalmonirhat Railway Divisional Engineer Ahsan Jabir and Traffic Surgeon Mostafizur Rahman said, "The miscreants had uprooted 120 feet of railway line at that place. As a result, after leaving Burimari, two coaches of the Lalmonirhat-bound Karatoya Express completely overturned with the engine of the train. As a result, Lalmonirhat's rail connectivity with the rest of the country was severed."
The railway authority also said, “Miscreants removed the face plate and face bolt line of the railway line, as a result of which this accident took place. In this incident, four trains including passenger trains have been stranded at different stations of this division. Security has been beefed up at the station and its surrounding areas."
Earlier, on the third day of the opposition's 84-hour hartal, railway services were suspended for nine hours when two coaches of a passenger train derailed at Teesta railway station in Lalmonirhat on Tuesday.
The rescue train from Lalmonirhat reached the spot on Wednesday morning and started work. Divisional Engineer Ahsan Jabir said that after the repair of the line, the train movement may start again in the afternoon.
