The BNP-led 20-party alliance has called for a strike on Monday morning and evening in protest against the passage of the 16th Amendment Bill. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the strike program in a press conference held at the political office in Gulshan on Saturday evening.
Mirza Fakhrul said, 'We have already protested the illegal and immoral power of impeachment of judges to the Parliament. But the government did not heed anything. The people of the country do not accept this amendment. We are calling for a peaceful morning-evening strike across the country on Monday to demand the repeal of the 16th Amendment.
However, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced that Hajj pilgrims' vehicles, ambulances, catering hotels, medicine shops, fire brigades, vehicles used by media and journalists, vehicles carrying dead bodies will be exempted from the strike.
Meanwhile, today is the second day of a two-day strike demanding the immediate release of Jamaat-e-Islami Naib Amir Delawar Hossain Saeedee, accused of war crimes and sentenced to life imprisonment. Even today this hartal is being celebrated all over the country including the capital. No long distance bus is running. However, scheduled trains have left from Kamalapur. Markets in the capital are closed. However, shops in the area are open. CNG, tempo and some minibuses were seen plying since morning. (8:30 am) No report of picketing or any untoward incident has been reported till the writing of this report.
